If you thought all pool enclosures were the same, think again. Several styles are available to suit every pool owner and budget.
Inflatable enclosures or air domes are portable options that are both affordable and easy to use—just simply flick a switch. Motorized fans are used to create a small pressure difference between the inside and outside air, which allows the domes to maintain inflation. These enclosures are made of a coated vinyl material that comes in an array of colors and can be customized to fit any pool size or shape. Inflatable enclosures work best in warmer climates since heating them can be rather expensive and they must be deflated in high winds.
Telescopic enclosures, also known as retractable enclosures, are semi-permanent structures that either slide on a track or use a rolling mechanism to open and close. This allows you to keep the enclosure open when you want to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air of the summer season and close it during colder months and inclement weather.
Some models lie very low to the ground and function more like a pool cover that you can see through. Though these must be retracted whenever you want to use the pool, the small amount of space between the water’s surface and top of the enclosure allows for excellent heat retention. Larger models have taller roofs that may be peaked or dome-shaped. These allow for a door at one or both ends and a certain amount of bordering deck space so you can swim and walk around the pool while the enclosure is on. Both types of telescopic enclosures are relatively affordable and easy to operate.
Permanent enclosures are a third option that add a lot of style and versatility. These structures can be freestanding, lean-to, or attached to your home, and they are built using strong, tempered aluminum framework and stainless steel hardware. The roof and walls are often made of light-transmitting polycarbonate, which provides excellent insulation. Custom enclosures may incorporate wood, brick, stone, and other materials to provide a style that matches your home or personal taste.
These enclosures fit into any location and often include roof panels that can be opened or closed, a series of sliding glass doors, and space for patio furniture. This allows the enclosure to double as a sunroom in addition to being a haven for year-round swimming. The ability to open the roof partially or fully means you can control how much air you let in, keeping the enclosure at a comfortable temperature and creating the feeling of swimming outdoors. Although it is the most expensive option, a permanent enclosure is a worthwhile investment because it increases your living space, allowing you to relax by the pool even when you’re not planning on taking a dip. It also becomes a multifunctional part of your home, adding to the square footage of your property, which can increase its value.
Benefits of an Enclosure
An extended swim season is great, and year-round swimming is even better. In addition to being able to use your pool more often, enclosures have other key benefits too:
Less time cleaning, more time swimming. Much like a pool cover, an enclosure keeps out dirt and debris, so you won’t need to skim leaves or insects out of the pool every time you want to take a dip. Because an enclosure shields the pool from outside elements, the water stays cleaner longer, which means you’ll be hooking up the vacuum less often.
Reduced chemicals. Evaporation, rainfall, and nighttime temperatures cause chemicals and heat to escape from swimming pools that are exposed to changing weather conditions. Once you install an enclosure, your pool is protected from the elements, and you’ll be adding and buying chemicals less often.
Energy efficiency. Because the water is clear of debris, the filter can be run for shorter periods of time. Since the enclosure provides insulation to trap warm air inside and maintain a steady water temperature, you’ll run the heater less often as well.
