With an Enclosure, Who Needs Rain Dates?

By Genevieve Shope

Enclosures extend your pool season and enhance the look of your yard

The line between indoor and outdoor living has begun to blur, and will almost disappear in the near future, thanks largely to products such as pool and spa enclosures. These structures allow homeowners to enjoy traditional outdoor activities — including swimming, grilling, lounging, entertaining and exercising — any time of the year. With an increasing number of people realizing the benefit of these outdoor living spaces, the demand for enclosures will continue to grow and change to meet consumer demand.

Product Strength

The materials used to assemble a pool or spa enclosure are extremely durable and corrosion-resistant — made to withstand harsh weather conditions, moisture, chemicals and UV rays.

Permanent enclosures generally consist of high-strength tempered aluminum framework, stainless steel fastening hardware and light-transmitting polycarbonate roof and wall panels. Polycarbonate, a thermoplastic shatterproof glass substitute, is now made with better insulating qualities that allow the enclosed area to easily absorb and retain solar energy. The materials will not rust, rot or decay, requiring minimal maintenance, such as a quick wash-down with a pressure hose to remove dirt. Of course, leaves, debris and snow should be removed from the structure periodically.

Telescopic enclosures consist of fabric or vinyl stretched over arches of safety glass or polycarbonate. The panels are retractable, meaning they slide along deck-mounted tracks or a roller mechanism so that each section fits neatly inside the next, exposing the indoor area if a homeowner chooses to enjoy favorable outdoor weather.

Inflatable enclosures are made of a coated vinyl or fabric base that is tear-resistant. The structure is inflated with a blower fan and anchored to the ground with steel cables; the difference in atmospheric pressure allows it to remain standing. Zippered doors provide entry and exit. Traditionally, vinyl and fabric do not withstand the elements as well as polycarbonate and aluminum, but these structures are ideal for some consumers looking to extend the swim season.

In the year ahead, enclosures will continue to increase in strength and stability to protect consumers. Enclosures will provide safety from accidents, with more efficient door locks to protect children and pets, as well as from Mother Nature, as she continues to dish out more and more unpredictable weather patterns.

Aesthetics

Not only are the materials strong, they are also increasingly attractive. Permanent enclosures, which can be attached to the home or standalone, are frequently designed to complement the home's appearance. An electrostatically applied powder coating used on the polycarbonate panels is available in a variety of colors, as is the aluminum framework. While neutral tones, such as sand, brown and white, are popular, less traditional colors are also available. Numerous roof styles and structural details are offered, such as molding, ridge cresting and finials, to create a polished and sophisticated look. Custom heights and features, like walkways leading from the enclosure to the home, help individualize the product for consumers. Brick, glass and natural stone can even be incorporated into the design.

Choice is the name of the game in the year ahead. More consumers will work with architects to coordinate all aspects of the design for a custom look. When it comes to designing the perfect pool or spa enclosure, the sky is the limit.

Technology

Manual and motorized opening roof systems are available with most models, which gives consumers the freedom to completely enclose the pool area or allow in a bit of sun. Some systems have a built-in operating override feature in case of a power outage, while others offer a rain sensor option to close the panels in case of inclement weather. Wall and door panels can also be opened on most models, behind which are screens to let the breeze flow through. In this automated age, enclosures will continue to offer technologies that provide ease of use and peace of mind for consumers.

Price

Different types of enclosures offer a variety of price points for consumers. With some thought and smart planning, even those on a tighter budget can find the perfect enclosure. When deciding which structure is the best fit, consumers should consider the pool's size and how the enclosed area will be used — be it for entertaining, fitness or both. It's important to research all necessary building and zoning permits required by the local municipality before deciding on a structure. It also helps to investigate possible companies, checking their products and reputation.

Use

The biggest change for next year is the increasing number of people who will buy enclosures for a number of reasons. Consumers will purchase enclosures to increase the square footage of their living area, thus increasing the value of their homes; they will also purchase enclosures to save money in this sensitive economic market. With the rising price of gas, fewer vacationers will be able to afford long trips that require driving — so they will choose to vacation in their own backyards, enjoying the privacy that enclosures provide. Other people will buy enclosures to entertain family and friends in the comfort of their own homes, as well as improve their health and overall quality of life. Realizing the benefit of these outdoor living spaces, the demand for enclosures will continue to grow and change to meet consumer demand.
